After your nice warming fire do you have an smokey odor coming from your fireplace? A quick fix is to sprinkle coffee grounds (when the fire has died out!) over the embers. The grounds will absorb and neutralize the creosote (that cause the smokey odor). An extra bonus is that the coffee grinds clump the soot making your clean up easier.

I've had a few questions in regard to whether the coffee grounds should be brewed or unused. Brewed, damp coffee grinds will work best and it is also a way to recycle coffee grounds!
