If you want to carve your pumpkin ahead of the Halloween festivities and want it to last longer than the candy give aways, do what Michael Natiello suggests: cut the hole from the bottom instead. When the top of the pumpkin is cut it will cave in, but a hole at the base will keep it standing tall. A heavier pumpkin will last longer! For easier carving pick a lighter weighing one with smooth skin.
