When you wash zippered items in the washing machine, its a good idea to zip half-way up and turn inside out before tossing in. This prevents snagging the other clothing or  knitted articles and seams. The half-way position relieves the tension from the twisting and agitation of the water in the machine. No more banging and clanging against the drum either.
