Who doesn’t want their produce to spoil before getting a chance to eat? Me! If you adjust the humidity levels in your refrigerator to accommodate the fruit you’ll be on the right track. Avocados like low humidity greens like broccoli like high humidity. Store fruits that emit ethylene, like apples, away from those like bananas that are ethylene sensitive so they don’t ripen too quickly.

Here’s a list to guide you:

High Ethylene Producers (Climacteric Fruits)

Apples, Apricots, Avocados, Bananas, Cantaloupes, Honeydew, Pears, Peaches, Pears, Plums, and Tomatoes.
Moderately High Ethylene Producers Peppers, Carrots, and Parsnips.

Ethylene-Sensitive Produce

  • Vegetables: Asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumbers, eggplant, green beans, kale, lettuce, mushrooms, parsley, and sweet potatoes.
  • Fruits: Berries, cherries, grapes, citrus, and watermelon.
