If you hear a storm is coming but you are out of rock salt, sprinkle baking soda liberally on your steps and walks before precipitation begins. This kitchen staple contains sodium bicarbonate which lowers the freezing point of water. So, it will prevent ice from forming. Another perk, it is less alkaline than rock salt so it won’t damage grass or corrode concrete surfaces. Head to the Dollar Store to stock up on baking soda!!!
