Tip of the Day: Keeping Strawberries Fresh

Summer is over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy strawberries. Keep these delightful berries fresh by NOT washing or cutting them until needed. Store them in the refrigerator in a plastic bag with holes poked in it. If you happen on a bargain or a bounty, you can freeze them too. Wash and remove stems. You can slice if you desire. So they won’t form into a frozen block, spread on a cookie sheet and freeze overnight, then transfer to a freezer bag. This way you can portion and save the rest. Eat very soon after thawing. Another tip: one bad strawberry can spoil the bunch. Toss it so it’s microorganisms don’t migrate to the other berries.
