Tip of the Day: Don’t Mix Fruits & Veggies in the Fridge
When we buy our produce we tend to place it all together in the fridge or crisper bins. Don’t! They will end up spoiling quicker if you do. Hard-skinned fruits and vegetables like apples, bananas, and potatoes give off ethylene gas which can cause fragile produce such as onions, kale, and strawberries to ripen at a faster pace so they will end up rotting quicker! Ugh! Put some distance between them, if possible, by separating them. Another way to keep your produce its freshest is to line your bins with paper towels. These will absorb any moisture and prevent bacteria buildup. It also makes cleaning the bins a lot easier! Try to store produce in breathable mesh bags. I usually poke holes using a fork in the plastic store produce bags that I bring home. This lets the air in. Or if you buy citrus fruits, they usually come in mesh bags. Rinse and reuse for your produce.
