If you have run out of salt to toss on your sidewalk and driveway, you can make a solution that works just as well from items you probably have on hand. In a bucket mix 1 teaspoon of dish liquid with 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol and add 1/2 gallon of warm water. Pour this over the icy areas and watch them melt. Tip within a tip: if the temperature drops below 15° it is best to skip salt regardless because while ice melts in the daytime, by nightfall it refreezes. If you use sand or kitty litter instead it will still create a non-slip surface and it isn’t temperature-dependent. Be safe in the ice and snow!
